Report: Vick bet on dog fights

BRISTOL, Conn. (UPI) -- A police informant Sunday alleged Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick has been a "heavyweight" in illegal dog fighting activity.

Vick has denied claims of his involvement since pit bull fighting was uncovered this month at the farm he owned in Chesapeake, Va.

That allegation is under investigation by NFL security personnel and Virginia law enforcement.

"I've seen Vick," the informant told ESPN's Outside the Lines. "We beat him back in 2000. That dog was Michael's dog. Michael was not in the pit. Michael's thing is he came with all of the money."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported Vick has been a participant at illegal dogfights, and that a tape exists to prove it.

Vick reportedly sold the property May 9, which he said he never used.

Hansen gets BMW playoff win

VIRGINIA WATER, England (UPI) -- Anders Hansen beat Justin Rose in one playoff hole Sunday to win the European Tour's BMW PGA Championship in Virginia Water, England.

Hansen created the playoff by making birdie at the final hole to finish with a 3-under 69 in the fourth round. Both players finished with scores of 8-under 280.

The win was Hansen's second at this event after winning it in 2002.

"I didn't play all that great," he said, "but it was tough out there, so I just tried to keep it all together (and) just keep the ball in play and see what happened."

Rose, who held at least a share of the lead after two of the first three rounds, also made a closing birdie at the 18th hole to cap a 1-under 71 under windy, wet conditions at the West Course at the Wentworth Club. Vijay Singh (66) tied for third place with Richard Sterne (74) at 7-under 281.

Alonso captures the Grand Prix of Monaco

MONTE CARLO (UPI) -- Fernando Alonso won the Formula One Grand Prix of Monaco in Monte Carlo Sunday, crossing the finish line four seconds ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.

The victory was his second of the season and the 17th of Alonso's Formula One career.

Also in the top five were Felipe Massa, Giancarlo Fisichella and Nick Heidfeld.

Alonso, a two-time world champion, brought the field to the green flag for 78 laps of racing around the tight 2.075-mile street course, and after only 12 laps, held a five-second lead over Hamilton. With 10 laps remaining, his lead was down to two seconds, but Hamilton was unable to close ground before the finish.

Alonso's first-place finish left him tied with Hamilton for first place in the point standings after five races. They both have 38 points, five ahead of Massa (33).

Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) is fourth with 23 points and Heidfeld (BMW) is fifth with 18 points.

Lethal dose of herbicide found in Woolmer

KINGSTON, Jamaica (UPI) -- A source close to police in Jamaica has said that a lethal dose of weed killer was found in the stomach of late Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer.

While initial forensic tests indicated Woolmer was likely poisoned in a Kingston hotel March 18, the source told the Times of London that the coach of the Pakistan national cricket team had ingested a deadly amount of the herbicide.

The report said that traces of the weed killer were found in both the inside and outside of a champagne glass inside Woolmer's room.

"Everything was contaminated," the source said. "The stomach content, the glass, everything. There was enough to kill him."

The source said that the weed killer was not available for purchase in Jamaica, the Times reported.

While some forms of weed killer have no smell or taste, a poisons expert from Britain said the item's use is extremely rare in relation to homicide.

The report said it had yet to be determined whether the deadly chemical had found its way into the champagne bottle as well.

Kim Clijsters retires from tennis

BRUSSELS (UPI) -- Former World No. 1 Kim Clijsters of Belgium Sunday announced her immediate retirement from women's tennis in a statement on her Web site.

The 23-year-old Clijsters had planned to retire at season's end, but said injuries dictated her decision earlier.

"The constantly returning injuries make it difficult to continue," she said. "I still like to play tennis, but my injuries the last few years have made me not enjoy it as much as before. All good things must come to an end."

Her final match was a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 loss to 61st-ranked Julia Vakulenko of Ukraine Thursday in the second round of the J&S Cup Tennis Tournament in Warsaw, Poland.

Her career record was 427-103, including 34 singles titles.

Clijsters earned nearly $15 million in prize money, and plans to get married in July.

"Money is important, but not the most important thing in my life," she added. "Health and a private life are so much more important."

MLB: N.Y. Mets 6, Arizona 2

PHOENIX (UPI) -- Shawn Green had a home run and three RBI Saturday night, as the New York Mets beat Arizona, 6-2.

Mets starter Jorge Sosa (1-0) -- making his first appearance for the Mets this season after being called up Saturday from Triple-A New Orleans -- scattered four hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out three.

Carlos Delgado had two hits, two walks and two runs scored; and Paul Lo Duca and Endy Chavez each drove in a run for the Mets, who have won four straight.

Brandon Miguel Montero drove in the Diamondbacks' runs with a pinch-hit double. Webb (2-2) yielded six runs -- five earned -- on six hits, walking four and striking out three in six innings for the Diamondbacks, who have lost five straight.

HOUSTON (UPI) -- Carlos Boozer had 33 points and 14 rebounds Saturday night, as the Utah Jazz beat Houston, 103-99, to advance to the NBA Western Conference semifinals.

Mayweather beats De La Hoya

LAS VEGAS (UPI) -- WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. Saturday night beat Oscar De La Hoya in a 12-round split decision in Las Vegas.

Two of the three scorecards had Mayweather winning 116-112 and 115-113, with De La Hoya winning one card by 115-113.

The final round ended with the fighters exchanging a flurry of punches, but most observers felt Mayweather used his superior speed to garner enough points for a win, before the decision was announced to a sellout crowd at the MGM Grand Hotel.

The bout is expected to generate a $100 million revenue take. The pay-per-view revenues succeeded what fight promoters expected before the fight.

As promoter of the fight, De La Hoya was guaranteed $25 million. Mayweather got $10 million.

Mayweather rose to 38-0 with 24 KOs, and De La Hoya fell to 38-5 with 30 KOs.

The 30-year-old Mayweather claimed before the bout that he would retire.

De La Hoya, 34, who last fought in May 2006 -- getting a sixth round TKO against Ricardo Mayorga -- is the only fighter to win world titles in six different weight classes.

He, too, has often talked about retirement.

Basketball

NBA: New Jersey 98, Toronto 97

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (UPI) -- Richard Jefferson scored with eight seconds left and then made a game-saving steal Friday as New Jersey advanced in the playoffs by downing Toronto, 98-97.

The Nets eliminated the Raptors in six games and will meet the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals, beginning Sunday in Cleveland.

Toronto owned a one-point lead and the ball, but with time running down on the shot clock Chris Bosh missed a jump shot with 18 seconds left in the game.

Antoine Wright claimed the rebound for the Nets and, after a time out, Jefferson took a pass from Jason Kidd and made a lay-up to give New Jersey the lead.

On the ensuing possession, Jose Calderon tried to lob a pass to Bosh under the basket for what would have been a winning dunk, but Jefferson leaped high to steal the ball and preserve the victory.

Jefferson scored 24 points to lead the Nets, who out-scored Toronto by 10 in the third period to take a seven-point advantage into the final quarter. Vince Carter added 21 and Kidd had 18.

Bosh had 23 points and T.J. Ford contributed 19 for the Raptors.

Castrale bids for first LPGA Tour win

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (UPI) -- Nicole Castrale shot a 4-under 67 on a wet course Friday for a one-shot lead after one round of the SemGroup Championship at Broken Arrow, Okla.

Castrale is seeking her first LPGA Tour victory.

Heavy rains left the Cedar Ridge Country Club course soggy, and tour officials instituted the "lift and clean" rule for the tournament's first round.

Brandie Burton, Angela Stanford and Karin Sjodin shared second place at 68, while Sophie Gustafson and Gloria Park were among those at 2-under 69.

Lorena Ochoa, playing for the second time since grabbing the No. 1 world ranking away from Annika Sorenstam, shot a 70.

Castrale, 28, whose best career finish has been a tie for third last year, played a bogey-free round Friday.

NHL: Buffalo 2, N.Y. Rangers 1 (OT)

BUFFALO, N.Y. (UPI) -- Chris Drury tied the game with eight seconds left in regulation Friday and Maxim Afinogenov scored in overtime as Buffalo beat the New York Rangers, 2-1.

Seemingly headed for a 3-2 deficit in their Eastern Conference semifinal series, the Sabres were the ones taking a one-game advantage, with Game 6 scheduled for Sunday in New York.

After almost three full periods of scoreless hockey, Martin Straka gave the Rangers the lead with 3:17 remaining in regulation with a slap shot. The puck went in and out of the net so fast the officials had to look at the replay to make sure it was a goal.

That score seemed certain to stand up as time ticked away, but Drury tied it on a slap shot to ignite the crowd and deflate the Rangers. It was Drury's sixth goal of the playoffs.

Afinogenov's goal came on the power play 4:39 into overtime. The goal came just 11 seconds after Blair Betts was sent off for hooking.

A win Sunday for the Sabres would send them up against either Ottawa or New Jersey with a berth in the Stanley Cup Finals on the line. Buffalo would have home-ice advantage in the conference finals.

Clint Bowyer claims Busch race

RICHMOND, Va. (UPI) -- Clint Bowyer pulled away over the final laps Friday night to win the NASCAR Busch Series Circuit City 250 at the Richmond International Raceway.

Bowyer finished 1.486 seconds ahead of Matt Kenseth.

It was the fifth Busch victory of Bowyer's career and his second this season.

Kenseth had a two-second lead in the race's final stages and seemed headed for victory, but a mishap involving Derrike Cope and J.J. Yeley brought out the caution flag.

There were 23 laps remaining when the green flag was displayed, and Bowyer was easily the fastest car during the closing minutes of the race. Kenseth grabbed second just ahead of Jeff Burton.

Carl Edwards retained his points lead in the series despite finishing 13th.

Serena Williams to skip German Open

BERLIN (UPI) -- Australian Open champion Serena Williams has decided to skip next week's German Open Tennis Tournament in Berlin due to a right groin injury.

Williams has appeared in only four WTA Tour events this season. She beat Maria Sharapova to win the Australian Open in January.

"Due to a groin injury, which has not completely healed, I am forced to cancel," she said in a statement.

The eight-time Grand Slam champion missed a recent tournament in Charleston, S.C., because of the groin injury -- and pulled out of a Fed Cup match against Belgium two weeks ago, citing a right-knee injury.

The rash of physical ailments has dropped her to No. 12 in the latest world rankings.

Williams said this week she was determined to play in this year's French Open, which begins May 28 at Roland Garros in Paris.

Eddie Robinson mourned

GRAMBLING, La. (UPI) -- Former Grambling State head coach Eddie Robinson Wednesday was laid to rest at a funeral procession in Grambling, La.

Robinson died April 4 after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease. He was 88.

When he retired in 1997 after 56 years at the school, he had a record of 408-165-15, and had sent more than 200 players to the NFL.

His funeral was attended by former players, coaches, a representative of New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner -- who accepted Robinson's teams as competitors at Yankee Stadium several times -- the Rev. Jesse Jackson and numerous state officials.

The mourners began gathering early at the school's new Assembly Center for the mid-morning service.

One of the former players was Doug Williams, the first black quarterback to lead an NFL team to a Super Bowl championship. Williams led Washington to a 42-10 rout of Denver in Super Bowl XXII in San Diego Jan. 31, 1998.

Unser Jr. wants back on the track at Indy

INDIANAPOLIS, D.C. (UPI) -- Al Unser Jr. says he is in preliminary talks with A.J. Foyt about joining his Indy Racing League team for next month's Indianapolis 500.

Unser, a two-time Indy 500 winner, was arrested in January for driving under the influence of alcohol near his home in Nevada.

He said he doesn't think the DUI arrest should keep him off the racetrack, the Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

It would be Unser's 19th start in the race.

Unser will be inducted next month into the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, joining his father Al Unser Sr. and his uncle, Bobby Unser.

Colts-Saints to open 2007 NFL season

NEW YORK (UPI) -- The New Orleans Saints visit the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Sept. 6 to open the 256-game 2007 NFL regular season.

The opening weekend also features 13 games on Sunday and two games on Monday night -- Sept. 10 -- when Baltimore plays at Cincinnati and Arizona heads for San Francisco and a game with the 49ers.

In addition to the league opener, Indianapolis has two other prime time games with a Monday night, Oct. 22, match-up at Jacksonville and a Thanksgiving Day game at Atlanta. That game is in addition to the traditional Thanksgiving NFL games at Dallas, which will go against the New York Jets, and Detroit, which will play the Green Bay Packers.

The 2007 schedule also includes the first regular-season NFL game played in Europe. The Miami Dolphins and New York Giants play Oct. 28 in London.

The NFL is again using "flexible scheduling" during Weeks 11-17 in which the league may switch "quality match-ups" to prime time for airing by NBC.

The last Sunday of the regular season is Dec. 30. The Super Bowl is set for Feb. 3 in Glendale, Ariz.

'Call Me Larry' runs for breast cancer

NEW YORK (UPI) -- A promising 4-year-old colt named Call Me Larry in New York is creating a stir in pink silks by donating 10 percent of his earnings to breast cancer research.

The horse is owned by Suzie O'Cain and stabled at her Find A Cure Stable at Belmont Park in New York. O'Cain told the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times she wanted to find a way to incorporate breast cancer research into racing, and said even the horse's name has an association to the effort.

She said she met Dr. Larry Norton, a deputy physician-in-chief at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, and he kept admonishing her to stop calling him "Doctor," and kept repeating "Call me Larry."

In his debut last month at Aqueduct, Call Me Larry galloped from far back in the pack to finish second, beaten by three-quarters of a length. Then on his second start on March 10, he rallied again and posted a one-length win.

O'Cain said she hasn't set a date for the colt's next run, but news will be posted on the horse's Web page at ry.html.

Media mogul possible Cubs bidder

CHICAGO (UPI) -- A Credit Suisse financial analyst says Emmis Communications' chief and former Seattle Mariners owner Jeff Smulyan is a possible bidder for the Chicago Cubs.

Analyst John Klim said there were four factors indicating Smulyan is qualified to make a bid for the team after the Tribune Co., announced last week it was selling the Cubs at the end of the 2007 season.

He noted Smulyan has an obvious interest in baseball, having owned the Mariners from 1989 to 1992, and making an unsuccessful bid last year for the Washington Nationals.

As well, he noted Emmis owns two Chicago FM radio stations which could be used as broadcast venues and there is relatively physical proximity to Chicago from Emmis headquarters in Indianapolis.

"We believe Mr. Smulyan may be more interested in using his time, energy and personal capital to make a bid for the storied Chicago baseball franchise," Klim's research paper said.

However, when contacted by Crain's Chicago Business, Smulyan said he wasn't pursuing the team, but had learned "never to say never."

Henry, Jones suspended by NFL

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Tennessee's Adam "Pacman" Jones and been suspended for one season and Cincinnati's Chris Henry for eight games by the NFL for off-field incidents.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement Tuesday saying the players had been suspended "without pay for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy and engaging in conduct detrimental to the league on numerous occasions."

The league suspended Jones for the entire 2007 season while Henry will miss half the 2007 regular season. "Each player must earn the right to be reinstated," the NFL release said.

Since he joined the NFL in 2005 Jones has been involved with police investigations at least 10 times, including an incident at a Las Vegas strip club that involved a shooting that left a man paralyzed. Las Vegas police are reportedly seeking felony charges against Jones.

Henry was arrested four times in 14 months and was suspended two games by the NFL last season.

Disgraced sprinter admits bank fraud

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Disgraced U.S. sprinter Tim Montgomery has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and bank fraud.

Montgomery entered his plea just before his trial was set to start in federal court in Manhattan, the New York Post reported Tuesday. He told a judge that he was involved in a bad-check scheme with his former coach, Steve Riddick, and others.

During the hearing, he admitted that Riddick paid him $20,000 for helping with a bad check and that he tried to deposit two counterfeit checks. He faces a maximum 46-month prison term.

Montgomery's career peaked in 2002 when he set a world record at 100 meters. But two years later he was charged with using steroids and was eventually banned from competition for two years and stripped of the record.

In the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he ran as an alternate in the heats of the men's 100-meter relay team, which won a gold medal. He failed to qualify for competition in the individual 100-meter event.

Montgomery and sprinter Marion Jones, his former girlfriend, have a 3-year-old son.

Angels-Indians series moved to Milwaukee

CLEVELAND (UPI) -- A spring snowstorm that hit Ohio has forced Major League Baseball to move this week's series between the Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Indians to Milwaukee.

The Angels-Indians series, Tuesday through Thursday, was set for Cleveland but the storm dropped about 10 inches of snow in Jacobs Field. On Monday, baseball officials, who had reportedly considered moving the games to California, opted to switch to Milwaukee's Miller Park.

The move was made "considering the combination of the weather forecast, the playing conditions at Jacobs Field, fan comfort issues and a concern about the length of inactivity for our players," Indians president Paul Dolan said.

The Indians lost an entire four-game series with Seattle to the weather this past weekend. Make-up dates for those games have not been announced.

Johnson jumps to 15th in golf rankings

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- Zach Johnson has ridden his victory at The Masters to No. 15 in the world golf rankings.

While the Augusta National Golf Club course and weather played havoc with the game of the world's best golfers, it had little effect on the latest golf rankings, except for Johnson, who shot a three-under-par 69 Sunday to claim the year's first major.

He entered the week rated 56th and is the first golfer since the rankings began 21 years ago to win The Masters while ranked higher than 50th.

Tiger Woods, one of three players tied for second two strokes behind Johnson, remained the top-ranked golfer and Nos. 2-7 -- Jim Furyk, Adam Scott, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Henrik Stenson and Vijay Singh -- remained the same.

Retief Goosen, also tied for second at The Masters, moved up one spot to eighth, knocking Geoff Ogilvy to ninth. Padraig Harrington is 10th.

New York Islanders goaltender Wade Dubielewicz was selected the top NHL player for the league's final 2006-07 week of regular-season play.

Colorado center Joe Sakic and Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom also were honored by the NHL, which heads into playoff mode this week.

Dubielewicz helped the Islanders to four wins last week, which allowed New York to earn the final playoff spot in the NHL's Eastern Conference. Two of his wins came in shootouts, including two of three shootout tries by the New Jersey Devils in an Islanders win Sunday that clinched the playoff slot on the regular-season's final day.

Sakic led the NHL with nine points last week. Sakic finished the regular-season second with 100 points -- 36 goals and 64 assists -- for the sixth time in his career. He has pulled to ninth on the all-time NHL points list, one point behind Phil Esposito.

Backstrom was 3-0-0 last week with a pair of shutouts and a 0.33 goals against average.

Zack Johnson wins the Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) -- Zach Johnson captured his first major title Sunday, winning the Masters at Augusta National by two strokes over Tiger Woods, Retief Goosen and Rory Sabbatini.

Johnson shot 3-under 69 in Sunday's final round to finish at 1-over 289, matching the highest winning score in Masters history.

"This is unbelievable," an emotional Johnson said after getting the symbolic green jacket from 2006 winner Phil Mickelson. "I always thought I could win this tournament, but maybe not this year."

Goosen and Sabbatini shot 3-under 69s Sunday, and Woods shot even-par 72 -- to finish as a runner-up for the third time in a major championship. He was second at the 2002 PGA Championship and the 2005 U.S. Open.

Jerry Kelly (70) and Justin Rose (73) shared fifth at 4-over 292, and third-round leader Stuart Appleby (75) tied for seventh with Padraig Harrington at 5-over 293.

Appleby leads the Masters by one shot

AUGUSTA, Ga. (UPI) -- Stuart Appleby will carry a one-shot lead over Tiger Woods and Justin Rose into Sunday's final round of the Masters Golf Tournament at Augusta National.

Appleby maintained his lead despite a 1-over-par 73 in Saturday's third round. His 54-hole score is 2-over 218.

Only one player, Retief Goosen, broke par Saturday.

"Today there was an element of guessing going on," said Appleby, who bids to become the first Australian to win the Masters on golf's most difficult course. "You don't see that all the time."

Woods moved into contention with an even-par 72 Saturday.

"It's one of the hardest rounds we've played out here," Woods said. "If you make 18 pars, you're going to move up the board."

Rose (75) is tied with golf's top-ranked player at 3-over 219.

Woods will be in the final pairing with Appleby.

The Masters champion has come out of the final pairing every year since 1991.

Toledo scandal ripples felt in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (UPI) -- The Nevada State Gaming Control Board said it had investigated "suspicious betting patterns" on two University of Toledo sporting events in 2005.

Chief Enforcement Officer Jerry Markling told USA Today the board concluded there were "no regulatory violations" by state casinos, although the board then contacted other "entities," which Markling declined to name.

Toledo running back Scooter McDougle was charged March 30 in Detroit with being part of a "point-shaving" scheme allegedly run by a Michigan gambler identified only as "Gary." McDougle, the federal indictment alleges, recruited both football and men's basketball players in exchange for cash, a car, cell phone and other items of value.

McDougle, 22, has admitted to the FBI that he accepted the goods and associated with "Gary," and that other players were offered various incentives, such as $10,000 to one player to sit out a particular game, the complaint alleged.

The NCAA said in a statement it is aware of the investigation and is in contact with the University of Toledo and law enforcement officials.

Dave Edwards wins the latest Busch race

LEBANON, Tenn. (UPI) -- Carl Edwards won Saturday afternoon's Pepsi 300 Busch Series race at the Nashville Superspeedway.

The No.60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford crossed the finish line 4.673 seconds ahead of David Reutimann.

The victory was Edwards' second in a row and 11th of his Busch career.

"I'm very fortunate to drive for Roush Racing," he said.

Edwards again built a big lead after a debris caution flag on lap 180 set everyone up for a final sprint to the checkered flag.

The only thing that could stop him from cruising to back-to-back victories was a caution flag or a mechanical problem.

"We didn't have anything for Carl," said Jason Leffler.

Dave Blaney, Leffler, and Regan Smith completed the top-five.

The win gives Edwards a 321-point lead over Blaney, who jumped past the idle Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch in the standings.

Former Indian cricket coach hospitalized

MUMBAI (UPI) -- Greg Chappell was hospitalized Saturday in the Indian city of Mumbai mere days after resigning his position as coach of the Indian national cricket team.

A spokesman for Bombay Hospital told the Sydney Herald Sun that the former cricket captain of the Australian national cricket team was taken to the hospital for a routine checkup.

Chappell had originally planned on returning to Australia on Friday, but called off the trip after feeling ill, the newspaper said.

The 58-year-old cricket official had reportedly complained of dehydration following a meeting Wednesday with the Indian cricket board over his decision to resign his post.

The Sun said the board has asked that he remain connected to the national team by helping train young players at the National Cricket Academy.

The shootout was tied at 2-2 when Burke turned Brunette away, and then Brown beat Budaj with a shot through his pads.

Car crash claims Tomlinson's father

WACO, Texas (UPI) -- The father and half brother of San Diego Chargers All-Pro running back LaDainian Tomlinson were killed in a car crash Friday near his hometown in Texas.

Oliver Tomlinson, 71, was riding in a truck driven by Ronald McClain, 49, when a tire on the vehicle blew out, causing the vehicle swerve off the road and flip over, killing Tomlinson at the scene, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported. McClain died later at a hospital.

Jewel Tomlinson, Oliver's wife and L.T's stepmother, told the newspaper that her husband had been estranged from the NFL star for much of Tomlinson's life, however, LaDainian had contacted his father during his sophomore year in college and the pair happily reunited.

The San Diego Union-Tribune said the NFL's 2006 MVP was thought to have been on his way to Texas and was not available for comment.

Trail conditions move Iditarod restart

WASILLA, Alaska (UPI) -- Organizers of Alaska's Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race have moved the restart away from Wasilla for the fifth straight year because of poor trail conditions.

Chas St. George, a spokesman for the annual race, told the Anchorage Daily News there has been too little snow, leaving the trail just beyond the Wasilla Multi-Use Sports Complex packed hard by snowmobiles, making it dangerous for dog teams. The restart will be held in Willow, 30 miles up the Parks Highway, as it has been since 2004.

The restart marks the real beginning of the race after a ceremonial start in Anchorage. Dogs and sleds are trucked from Eagle River to the restart.

While mushers generally prefer Willow for the restart, the organizers like Wasilla because it is larger and logistics are easier. The restart has been moved every year since 2002. A severe snow shortage in 2003 forced organizers to move the restart to Fairbanks.

The Iditarod begins March 3 in Anchorage with the restart on March 4 in Willow.

NBA: Utah 114, Denver 104

DENVER (UPI) -- Deron Williams had 26 points and 14 assists and Matt Harpring scored 22 Friday night as the Utah Jazz beat Denver, 114-104.

Paul Millsap finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Jazz, who won despite the absence of Mehmet Okur and Andre Kirilenko. Okur missed the game with a back injury, and Kirilenko came out the game early due to a bruised knee.

The Jazz led, 31-30, after the first quarter, but started to build a lead during the second. During the final three minutes of the first half, C.J. Miles hit a three and Harpring hit a jumper to run Utah's lead to eight points -- and the Jazz led, 57-48 at the intermission.

Utah ran its lead to 14 early in the third and finished the stanza with a commanding lead, 93-74. Denver used a 10-2 run to get with nine points with just under three minutes left, but Utah held the Nuggets off the rest of the way.

NFLPA may OK punishing lawbreakers

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) -- The head of the NFL Players Association said in Indianapolis Friday he would consider a proposal to discipline players who repeatedly get in legal trouble.

Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFPLA, said players are "sort of moving in the direction" of adopting penalties similar to the NFL's three-strikes program for players who violate the NFL's drug policy, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A group of players suggested the idea Thursday during a meeting in Indianapolis with Commissioner Roger Goodell, Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney and Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen. The meeting was called to look at ways the league might deal with the increase in off-the-field behavioral problems involving players, the newspaper said.

"You can't continue to keep violating policies," said Upshaw. "You can't be in the wrong place three or four times. One time, two times maybe, but three or four times in the wrong place at the wrong time? They didn't like that."

An NFL player who tests positive for a banned substance is suspended for four games. A second failed test gets a player a one-year suspension.

Rain disrupts LPGA Tour event

HONOLULU (UPI) -- Stacy Prammanasudh owned a one-shot lead at the Field Open in Honolulu Friday when play was suspended due to darkness.

Heavy rain delayed play for two hours during the middle of the round, but Prammanasudh was able to complete play with a 4-under 68 that left her at 10-under 134 for 36 holes.

Jee Young Lee was at 9-under for the tournament through 14 holes and Angela Park was 9-under through eight when play was halted.

Morgan Pressel had completed play at 136, having fired a 65 Friday.

The second round will be completed early Saturday, after which the third and final round will be played.

Prammanasudh is looking for her second LPGA Tour victory.

Dallas won for the fifth time in seven games, with Jussi Jokinen and Krys Barch both producing a goal and an assist.

The Stars advanced to 75 points, five behind Anaheim for the division lead. San Jose is in second place in the division with 77 points. The Ducks have lost three in a row.

Dallas built a 4-0 lead before Corey Perry managed Anaheim's lone goal with less than five minutes to play.

The teams have split six meetings this year.

Jeff Gordon wins NASCAR pole

FONTANA, Calif. (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon won the 57th pole of his NASCAR career Friday, turning in the fastest qualifying time for Sunday's Auto Club 500 at California Speedway.

Gordon completed a lap around the track in 38.765 seconds. Kasey Kahne will start on the outside of the first row after a lap that was .045 of a second slower than Gordon's.

Friday's achievement leaves Gordon one pole win behind Bobby Allison, who is fifth on the all-time list. Gordon is the only driver to have won more than once at the California Speedway, having done so three times.

Mark Martin and Kevin Harvick qualified third and fourth. Harvick edged Martin last weekend to capture the Daytona 500.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified fifth and Nextel Cup rookie Juan Montoya was ninth.

Montoya moved to NASCAR this year from the Formula One series.

Muhammad Ali returning to Kentucky roots

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (UPI) -- Muhammad Ali is returning to his roots in Louisville, Ky., where the former three-time world heavyweight boxing champion was born 65 years ago.

Ali is moving back to a city where resentment over his refusal to be drafted during the Vietnam war still lingers, the International Herald Tribune said Friday. Racial tensions still flare occasionally, as they did recently over a proposal to rename a Louisville street in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

It has been 40 years since a draft board rejected Ali's bid for conscientious objector status. Times have changed and so has Ali, slowed by degenerative Parkinson's disease.

The champ, his wife, Lonnie, and their teenage son are moving into a $1.8 million house this spring in the East End, one of Louisville's wealthiest and whitest areas.

Coin toss gives Browns No. 3 slot in draft

INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) -- The Cleveland Browns won a coin flip for the right to select third in this year's NFL draft, while regulating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the fourth spot.

The Browns and Buccaneers had tied for the third-worst regular-season record -- 4-12 -- and their opponents had identical winning percentages, leading the NFL to the coin flip tiebreaker.

Tampa Bay General Manager Bruce Allen called heads but the toss Friday came up tails.

The 2007 NFL draft is scheduled for April 28-29. The Oakland Raiders, who finished 2006 2-14, have the first selection followed by the Detroit Lions, who were 3-13.

Letzig leads at New Zealand Open

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (UPI) -- Michael Letzig owned the clubhouse lead but many players had their second rounds cut short Friday by rain at the New Zealand PGA Championship.

Letzig turned in a four-under-par 68 and is at seven-under 137. Peter Senior, Chez Reavie and Ryan Howison are also seven-under but were unable to complete their rounds Friday and are to return to the course early Saturday.

Play was stopped twice Friday at the Nationwide Tour event because of storms, the second time ending play for the day with some players -- including Howison -- only 10 holes into their rounds, That mean they'll have to play about 26 holes Saturday.

Letzig, a 26-year-old tour rookie, battled the weather and early problems -- bogeys on two of his first three holes -- to move to the lead. He answered each bogey with birdies and shot three-under 33 on his second nine to move into the lead.

Carter, 32, had 10 goals and 17 assists in 54 games for Columbus this season. Over 10 years and 664 games in the NHL, Carter has 201 goals and 219 games. He previously played with Washington, Boston, Edmonton, the New York Rangers, Vancouver and Columbus.

The Hurricanes on Friday also reassigned forward Ryan Bayda to Albany of the American Hockey League.

L.A. Olympic bid includes stadium makeover

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Los Angeles civic leaders have unveiled plans to upgrade the historic Coliseum to further their bid to host the 2016 Olympic Summer Games.

Plans call for a $112 million temporary renovation of the 84-year-old facility, which because of its landmark status, cannot be permanently changed, the Los Angeles Times said Friday.

Installation of a $20 million running track is a major cost item. Among other things, the design suspends 204 luxury suites over the existing rim. Seating capacity would be cut from 92,000 to about 83,000.

The USOC will decide between Chicago and Los Angeles on April 14.

Los Angeles was host to the Games in 1932 and 1984. Chicago has never hosted the Olympics.

Youzhny moves to Rotterdam semifinals

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (UPI) -- Unseeded Mikhail Youzhny was a straight-set winner Friday and earned a semifinal berth in the $1 million ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in The Netherlands.

Youzhny posted a solid 6-4, 6-2, victory over sixth-seeded David Ferrer and next goes against Novak Djokovic in Saturday's tournament semifinals.

Djokovic got his semifinal slot with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, upset of second-seeded Tommy Robredo.

The other semifinal pits top-seeded Nikolay Davydenko against third-seeded Ivan Ljubicic -- two players ranked in the top eight in the world. Davydenko rallied for a 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4, quarterfinal victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber, while Ljubicic on Friday defeated Florida Mayer, 6-4, 6-2.

The winners of Saturday's semifinal matches play Sunday for the tournament title and a first-prize of $193,000.

COL BKB: Oregon 64, Washington St. 59

EUGENE, Ore. (UPI) -- Tajuan Porter scored 21 points Thursday night as the 24th-ranked Oregon Ducks beat No. 11 Washington, 64-59.

Aaron Brooks scored 16 points and Maarty Leunen had 11 for the Ducks (21-7, 9-7 Pac-10), who won for the first time in their last four games.

Daven Harmeling scored 15 points and Kyle Weaver had 14 for the Cougars (22-5, 11-4), who had won five games prior to Thursday night's contest.

Washington State went up by 14 in the first half, but the Ducks chipped away at the lead and had it down to 30-25 at intermission.

Porter hit a pair of free throws with just under three minutes left, and Leunen tipped in a missed lay-up by Brooks with just under a minute to go.

Washington pulled to within a point, but failed to capitalize on a chance to tie the game -- turning the ball over instead in the final seconds.

Raiders release Aaron Brooks

OAKLAND, Calif. (UPI) -- The Oakland Raiders Thursday released Aaron Brooks, who compiled an 0-8 record as the team's starting quarterback last season.

Brooks completed 57 percent of his throws in 2006 for 1,105 yards and three touchdowns along with eight interceptions.

Oakland went 2-14, the worst record in the NFL.

After starting the first two games of the season, Brooks suffered a shoulder injury that kept him out for half the campaign. His return to the lineup met with no success.

Brooks played six seasons with the New Orleans Saints before coming to Oakland.

Andrew Walter started the other eight games for the Raiders last season. If it chooses, Oakland will have its pick of top quarterbacks in the NFL Draft since the Raiders own the No. 1 selection.

Lab may have mishandled Landis samples

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- The French lab that analyzed U.S. cyclist Floyd Landis' Tour de France urine samples may have allowed improper access to the samples, it was reported.

Citing lab records, the Los Angeles Times reported that a number of errors could call into question the doping case against Landis, who won the 2006 Tour de France but has been accused of using performance-enhancing testosterone during the race.

Lab records show that two technicians from LNDD -- which is owned by the French government -- were involved in the original urine analysis and in a second test that validated the first one.

It was not clear whether the technicians' involvement in the testing was significant enough to disqualify the lab's findings, but international testing standards prohibit technicians from taking part in both tests, to avoid putting them in a circumstance where they would validate their own findings, the newspaper said.

The same lab committed a similar error in 2005, leading to the dismissal of doping charges against Spanish cyclist Inigo Landaluze in December 2006, the newspaper said.

Schilling looks to free agency after 2007

FORT MYERS, Fla. (UPI) -- Curt Schilling said he will file for free agency after the 2007 season because the Boston Red Sox didn't extend his contract during spring training.

Schilling, speaking with WEEI-AM radio in Boston, said he met with Red Sox officials and was told the team would not decide on whether to offer a new contract until after the season.

"We talked yesterday and they have decided they're going to go more from a business standpoint," Schilling told WEEI. "They're not going to offer me a contract until after the season. I'm going to play out the season and file for free agency at the end of the year."

Schilling, a right-handed starter for Boston, was 15-7 with a 3.95 earned run average last season. He joined the Red Sox in 2004 and was 21-6 with a 3.26 ERA in helping Boston win the World Series.

In addition to Boston, he pitched for Baltimore, Houston, Philadelphia and Arizona over a 19-year career. Schilling owns a 207-138 record and 3.44 ERA.

Lovie Smith at odds with Chicago Bears

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Head Coach Lovie Smith took the Chicago Bears to the Super Bowl last month but reports are circulating that Smith will be out after next season.

Smith, the lowest paid head coach in the NFL, said he was certain a long-term contract would be worked out but his agent told ESPN the issue is at a stalemate, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

Agent Frank Bauer said the two sides are "not close" in contract talks and at this point and "Lovie will be a free agent after next season."

Bauer and Ted Phillips, the team president, spoke on the matter this week but nothing concrete apparently has come of it.

Smith is scheduled to make $1.45 million in the 2007 season, the final year of a four-year deal. Talks reportedly began with a projected raise to $3 million, still below the norm.

Freak accident claims race horse

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Please Be Quick, a 4-year-old gelding, had to be euthanized at Belmont Park in New York after a freak accident involving a truck the race horse was riding in.

One of the horse's legs fell through the wooden floor of the truck causing torn tendons, track officials told the New York Post.

A passing motorist yelled to the driver that the horse's rear left leg was hanging through the floor of the truck.

Please Be Quick, who was being transported to Belmont Park from upstate Hudson, was in pain, the driver said, but he was able to lift his leg out of the hole in the floorboards on his own.

The horse, who won one of nine starts and finished in the money five of nine races, suffered an 11-inch gash on his leg. Veterinarians put him down about two hours later.

Noted sports photographer dies

MARBLEHEAD, Mass. (UPI) -- Dick Raphael, an outstanding Boston sports photographer who always knew where to be for that elusive "money shot," has died at 68.

Raphael died Saturday at the Marblehead, Mass., house where he lived his entire life, the Boston Globe said. He became ill Friday and collapsed at home the next evening.

Rafael was a fixture at Boston Garden where he covered the Celtics from Bill Russell to Larry Bird, sitting behind the net on his ever-present stool. His favorite shot was a photo of Russell blocking a shot by Wilt Chamberlain, the Globe said.

The Basketball Hall of Fame put together an exhibit of Raphael's pictures, calling him "the dean of Boston sports photographers and one of the premier photographers in the United States," the Globe said.

He covered every Super Bowl and for years all home games of the former Boston Patriots. His pictures were widely published.

Rafael is survived by his companion, Meralee Whitman, and a brother.

Early birdies give Howison lead

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (UPI) -- Ryan Howison birdied four of his first five holes Thursday and took a one-stroke lead after one round of the New Zealand stop for the Nationwide golf tour.

Howison finished with a seven-under-par 65 and is just ahead of Peter Senior, who turned in a 66 Thursday. Chez Reavie was in third place at five-under 67. Five players, including Jason Caron whose double bogey on No. 18 dropped him out of second place, were tied for fourth at four-under-par 68.

Howison opened with a par but ran off four consecutive birdies to race to the top of the leader board. After four pars, he birdied 10 and 12. His lone flaw of the day came at No. 14 with a bogey but he rebounded with birdies at Nos. 15 and 16 to reach seven under.

Senior, who started his round on the back nine, was at one-under after nine holes but birdies three of his next four and also beat par at Nos. 6-7 to get to six under.

Overbrook Farm gets biggest breeding bonus

FRANKFORT, Ky. (UPI) -- Overbrook Farms has received the largest share of bonus money in the first year of a Kentucky program to help breeders of state-bred Thoroughbreds.

The home of Storm Cat produces about 75 foals a year and collects a stud fee of $500,000 for each foal sired by Storm Cat -- a descendant of Secretariat -- the Louisville (Ky.) Courier-Journal reported Wednesday.

Overbrook Farms collected the biggest share of the $12.5 million awarded by the new Thoroughbred breeders' incentive fund, which bases the bonus payments on the number of races won by a breeder's horses in 2006.

Most of the incentive money is from the sales tax on stallion fees, the Courier-Journal said.

Mariners' Ichiro may become free agent

PEORIA, Ariz. (UPI) -- Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki's flirtation with becoming a free agent after the 2007 season hopefully won't hurt the team.

"In 15 years of playing baseball, I've never filed for free agency," Ichiro told reporters Tuesday at spring training in Peoria, Ariz. "I've never had a choice before in the past. If you ask me, 'It is possible that I might become a free agent,' I would say yes, it is possible."

Tuesday was the first day of full squad workouts.

Ichiro said he had not sorted out his feelings on filing for free agency, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Wednesday. The superstar outfielder from Japan has been an All-Star in each of the six seasons with the Mariners and arguably is their top player.

Tony Attanasio, Ichiro's agent, said the Mariners might trade his client before his contract expires this fall, if they can't sign him to an extension. Ichiro is due to make $11 million this season, the last year of a four-year, $44 million contract.

His career-best 15.4-point-per-game average is third on the Nuggets and his 39.3 percent shooting from three-point range tops the team.

Mueller may resign as Norway skating coach

OSLO, Norway (UPI) -- The speed skating world in Norway was in disarray as a regional team called for the resignation of national squad coach, former U.S. skater Peter Mueller.

While Mueller has support from the national skating association and some regional teams, Aftenposten says that he is so frustrated he may quit coaching the Norwegian national team.

The conflict began last weekend after skater Mari Hemmer alleged Mueller called her "fat," prompting complaints from a regional speed skating team. Team Furumo said Mueller's hard training methods injured skater Reidar Borgersen and called for his resignation.

The attacks reportedly left Mueller considering ending his tenure with the national team he joined in 2004.

Aftenposten said members of the national skating association board and the national team have vowed to quit if Mueller resigns.

Norv Turner to coach San Diego Chargers

SAN DIEGO (UPI) -- Norv Turner has been hired to be the head coach of the San Diego Chargers.

Turner replaces Marty Schottenheimer, who was fired a week ago after the Chargers went an NFL-best 14-2 in the regular season but lost their first playoff game.

Schottenheimer was given a one-year contract extension after the season but was let go apparently because of friction between the coach and Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith.

Turner was most recently offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. The Chargers mark his third head coaching assignment, having led the Washington Redskins for seven seasons and the Oakland Raiders for two. He has a 58-82-1 record.

The Chargers interviewed six candidates to replace Schottenheimer, including Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, 49ers assistant Mike Singletary, Baltimore defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, New Orleans defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs and Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Zetterberg again NHL player of the week

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Detroit left wing Henrik Zetterberg has earned his second consecutive top NHL player of the week honor.

The NHL selects three players each week as the league's players of the week. This week Zetterberg is joined by Anaheim right wing Teemu Selanne and Colorado center Joe Sakic for the awards, the league said Monday.

Zetterberg piled up eight points in helping the Red Wings to a 2-1 record last week. Detroit scored a total of eight goals during the week and Zetterberg, with four goals and four assists, was involved in all of them. He collected his first career hat trick last Wednesday during a 4-1 win over Dallas.

Selanne also had four goals and four assists, with all eight points coming in the last three Ducks' games of the week. He is 10th in the league in scoring with 36 goals and 35 assists for 71 points over 60 games.

Sakic also had eight points, with his coming on two goals and six assists. He had two goals and three assists in a 7-5 win over Calgary. One of those goals was the 600th of his career.

Njenga at Tokyo Marathon

TOKYO (UPI) -- Masazumi Soejima, Daniel Njenga and Hitomi Miya were the three big winners at the 2007 Tokyo Marathon.

Soejima, 36, won the 10 kilometer race in the wheelchair category with a time of 1 hour 32 minutes and 21 seconds, while Njenga, a guest runner from Kenya, won the men's category with a time of 2 hours 9 minutes and 45 seconds, the Japan Times reported Monday.

Miya, an 18-year-old from Okayama Prefecture, beat out the rest of the women with a time of 2 hours, 31 minutes, 1 second.

The event had about 30,000 participants and even though it was raining, there were plenty of spectators along the course cheering the runners on.

Nearly 95,000 people applied to participate in the Tokyo Marathon, one of the largest in Asia.

The event showed Tokyo's ability to handle a large-scale sporting event, which is good since the city is Japan's candidate for the 2016 Summer Olympics, the newspaper said.

NASCAR to expand its romance novel status

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UPI) -- One year after it began a partnership with a top romance novel publisher, NASCAR is set to expand on its literary status with a planned series of paperbacks.

While the earlier novels that sprung from the unusual partnership were only NASCAR-themed in nature, The New York Times said that the new series of 16 Harlequin paperback novels will fully embrace the sport.

The new romance series will not only feature NASCAR settings but the bookend entries of the Harlequin novels will offer real-life NASCAR driver Carl Edwards as a literary character.

The move could prove especially beneficial to NASCAR as nearly 55 percent of all mass-market fictional novels sold each year spring from the romance genre.

NASCAR Vice President of Licensing Mark Dyer recognized this fact and cited the increasing number of female racing fans as being a crucial factor in the partnership.

"Look at our stats. Forty percent of our fans are women, and among younger fans it's trending toward 50-50," he told the Times.

NBA All-Stars: West 153, East 132

LAS VEGAS (UPI) -- Kobe Bryant had 31 points, six assists and six steals Sunday as the West easily beat the East, 153-132, in the 56th NBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas.

Bryant's exhibition earned him game MVP honors, and the West posted an All-Star Game record 52 assists -- and just missed breaking the record for most points, 155 set four years ago -- in snapping a two-game losing streak in the annual showcase.

Amare Stoudemire had 29 points and nine rebounds for the West, Carmelo Anthony had 20 points and nine rebounds and Shawn Marion put up 18 points and eight rebounds.

LeBron James -- last year's All-Star Game MVP -- finished with 28 points, six rebounds and six assists for the East. Dwight Howard scored 20 and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.

The West led, 39-31, after one quarter and then went on a second-quarter tear that saw the lead expand to 51-35 on a Dirk Nowitzki three-pointer with 9:44 left in the half.

A 7-0 run gave the West a 20-point lead, 59-39, with seven minutes left in the quarter, and the West came out hot after the break -- running the lead to 108-76 with a little over four minutes left in the third.

Bryant punctuated his MVP bid with an explosive, spinning slam dunk with 30 seconds left to play.

He trailed co-leaders Wayne Levi and Andy Bean by two shots in the final round, but went on to card a 1-underr 70 -- closing with pars on the final five holes -- and improved his career record in the state to 1-92.

Watson finished at 4-under 209 to collect a first-place check for $240,000.

"It was a difficult day," he said. "I started off and I really played a lot of good, quality shots, but didn't make any putts at all. I bogeyed eight and nine and said to myself 'this is not the way it's supposed to be. I was supposed to make a couple of those putts'".

Levi and Bean had to complete their second round early Sunday morning after play was suspended by darkness on Saturday.

Bean (72) shared second place with Jay Haas (69) at 3-under 210.

Survey: Sports may not build character

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- Conventional wisdom holds that sports builds character, but a new survey suggests U.S. high school athletes cheat more than classmates who don't play sports.

The two-year study of high school athletes -- conducted by the Josephson Institute of Ethics in Los Angeles -- also found growing acceptance of cheating as a way to gain competitive advantage, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Michael Josephson, president and founder of the institute, told the newspaper the report -- based on interviews with 5,275 high school athletes across the United States -- found that many coaches are "teaching our kids to cheat and cut corners."

"There is reason to worry that the sports fields of America are becoming the training grounds for the next generation of corporate and political villains and thieves," said Josephson.

James Staunton, commissioner of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section -- the governing body for most high school sports in Southern California -- told the newspaper he "hopes" ethical deviance hasn't "gone that far."

"What this points out to me is that we still have a tremendous amount of work to do with our athletes, parents and coaches," Staunton said.

Harvick wins the Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UPI) -- Kevin Harvick came out of nowhere Sunday afternoon to beat Mark Martin and win the Nextel Cup's Daytona 500 at Daytona Beach, Fla.

The crash-filled race ended under a caution flag.

It was Harvick's first Daytona 500 victory, and the 11th win of his Nextel Cup career.

During the final two laps, Martin tried to fight off a challenge from Kyle Busch, and Harvick gained ground on the outside of the track. Harvick was able to avoid Busch, and with Matt Kenseth on his rear bumper, he caught Martin.

They were side-by-side as they hit the checkered flag, with Harvick edging Martin by about three feet.

"Kenseth just pushed the hell out of me," said a jubilant Harvick. "I can't believe it."

Jeff Burton, Mike Wallace and David Ragan completed the top five.

Defending champion Jimmie Johnson was one of a number of drivers eliminated by a multi-car crash on the race's 174th lap.

Murray -- who beat Australia's Lleyton Hewitt in last year's title match -- had to overcome 26 aces by the 6-foot-10 inch Karlovic, who dropped just one of 51 games and had a tournament-best 87 aces heading into the final.

Murray's career record at San Jose rose to 10-0.

Ilonen wins the Indonesian Open

JAKARTA (UPI) -- Finland's Mikko Ilonen Sunday won the European Tour's Indonesia Open Golf Tournament in Jakarta by one shot, despite a bogey on the last hole.

He shot a closing 1-under-par 70 to finish 9-under-par 275 overall, escaping with his first European Tour victory when rookie Andrew Tampion of Australia also bogeyed the tournament's 72nd and final hole.

The players had come to the 18th hole one-shot apart.

Tampion shot a final round of 2-under 69 and shared second place with third-round co-leader Frankie Minoza (71) of the Philippines and Shiv Kapur (67) of India at 8-under 276.

"I think it is a big thing for Finnish golf," said Ilonen, who is the first player from his country ever to win on the European Tour. "Golf is growing in Finland."

Canas wins the Brazil Open

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil (UPI) -- Guillermo Canas of Argentina surprised top-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain in straight sets Sunday to win the ATP Tour's Brazil Open at Costa do Sauipe.

The scores were 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

The victory gave Canas his seventh career title, and his first since the 2004 season.

He had served a 15-month ban after testing positive for a banned diuretic, and returned to the tour last September. An appeal in June 2005 led to a reduction from the original ban of two years.

"The match was really close with both of us playing very well (but) I played better the key points," Canas said.

Ferrero saw his losing streak in title matches grow to five, including events at Rotterdam, Vienna and Cincinnati.

This was just the second meeting between the two. Ferrero had won the first in three sets at the Miami Masters in 2005.

Creamer got first LPGA win since 2005

HONOLULU (UPI) -- Paula Creamer won on the LPGA Tour Saturday for the first time since 2005, when she made a long birdie putt on the 17th hole at the SBS Open.

Granada got into a share of the lead with a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole. She was 8-under 208 while watching Creamer, playing in the final group, finish her final two holes.

Creamer placed her second shot 40 feet from the hole at 17, and then made the birdie putt to win $165,000.

Granada won $1 million at the ADT Championship at the end of 2006, then she helped Paraguay win the Women's World Cup of Golf.

Down a goal late in the third period, Kopitar scored off a feed from Lubomir Visnovsky to make it 2-2 with 5:14 remaining.

Kopitar's penalty gave the Ducks a power play that carried over into overtime, but Garon held the Kings back.

After a scoreless five minutes, the teams went into shootout mode.

Kopitar and Ryan Getzlaf both missed in the first round then Michael Cammalleri scored for the Kings and Selanne answered the call for the Ducks.

Tom Kostopoulos came up empty and Andy McDonald fanned on a wide-open net. Giguere staved off Dustin Brown while Chris Kunitz and Alexander Frolov came up empty as well, and finally, Perry beat Garon for the Ducks' victory.

The teams meet again Sunday in Anaheim.

Saturday night's performance was the fifth time Phelps set a 200-meter world record in the butterfly.

Phelps -- who won eight medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens -- is scheduled to swim the 200-meter butterfly in March at the World Championships in Melbourne.

Frank Broyles to retire at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (UPI) -- Frank Broyles, the longtime athletic director at Arkansas, Saturday announced his retirement, effective Dec. 31, 2007.

The 82-year-old Broyles worked at Arkansas since taking the job as head football coach in 1957. He is a member of college football's Hall of Fame after compiling a 144-58-5 record in 19 seasons.

His lone national championship came in 1964. He was both the AD and football coach when he retired from coaching in 1976.

"For nearly 50 years, I have considered it a privilege to serve this university as a coach and an athletic administrator," he said. "It is the only job I have ever desired to have."

Tour of California skipped tests for EPO

SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -- The Tour of California has acknowledged that cyclists last year were not tested for the most commonly abused drug in the sport.

The 640-mile race from San Francisco to Long Beach starts Sunday. This is its second year.

Organizers admit they did not test for EPO, an anti-anemia drug given to cancer and dialysis patients, The New York Times reported. The drug is used illicitly by athletes to boost performance.

The race is sponsored by Amgen, which manufactures a genetically engineered version of EPO. The company said it was using the race to educate the public on the risk of improper use of the drug.

"Our understanding going into the race was that the test would be included," said a company spokeswoman, Mary Klem. "And we were told afterward that no rider tested positive for EPO or for any banned substances."

Last year's winner of the Tour of California was Floyd Landis. He will not be competing this year as he fights allegations that he used testosterone to win the Tour de France.

Mauresmo, Clijsters head for showdown

ANTWERP, Belgium (UPI) -- Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters won their semifinal matches Saturday at the WTA Tour's Proximus Diamond Games Tennis Tournament in Antwerp, Belgium.

If Mauresmo wins Sunday, it will be the second straight year she has beaten the former World No. 1 at the event -- and she can take home a $1.3 million diamond-studded tennis racket for winning it three times in a five-year span.

"Every match I win, the racket starts to be a little bit more on my mind,"

she said. "Being in the final will be the toughest match to win."

"It will be a very emotional day for me," said Clijsters, who will play her last match at Antwerp before she retires at the end of the season.

The pair will be gunning for a winner's check of $88,265.

The 6-foot-3 inch sophomore was injured when the car he was driving hit a tree late Monday evening. He was transported to the Carle Foundation Hospital.

Freshman center Brian Carlwell also sustained a concussion, but was treated and later released.

"It has been mutually agreed upon between myself and Jamar Smith and his family, that he sit out the remainder of this season so that he can focus all of his attention on the physical, emotional, academic and other related issues he will face in the coming weeks," said Coach Bruce Weber. "As I said Wednesday, this is a very difficult time for Jamar. Our coaches, players and program will continue to support him as he deals with this situation."

Girls wrestling growing

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (UPI) -- Boys outnumber girls by at least 50-to-one in U.S. high school wrestling programs, but girls' wrestling is getting bigger, The New York Times reported.

About 5,000 high school girls wrestled last year, the National Federal of State High School Associations reported. That's a five-fold increase from 1995, and it probably understates the true number since many states did not report girls' wrestling participation, the newspaper said.

In any case, it doesn't come close to matching the number of high school boys -- 250,000 -- who participate in the sport.

Women's wrestling has been added as an Olympic sport and some colleges have added it as well.

One impediment to growth for girls' wrestling is a shortage of girls' teams. Without girls' teams, the sport may have trouble attracting girls to participate, and without girls' participation there won't be many girls' teams.

In a few cases, the Times reported, courts have ruled that girls should be permitted to join boys' teams if there are no girls' teams available to them.

Girls have teams in Texas and Hawaii, and in some California schools, the newspaper said.

Roddick into semifinals in SanJose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) -- Top seed Andy Roddick fought off fellow American Vincent Spadea to move into the semifinals at the $416,000 SAP Open in San Jose, Calif.

Roddick, who titled here in 2004 and '05, topped the eighth-seeded Spadea, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 and has won 10 of his 11 matches this year.

Last year it was Murray who beat Roddick in two sets. Murray then beat Lleyton Hewitt in the final for his only career title.

Also Friday, sixth seed Benjamin Becker of Germany beat fourth-seeded Russian Marat Safin, 6-4, 6-3. Big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic landed in the semis by ousting fifth- seeded American Mardy Fish 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 at HP Pavilion. Fish was the 2004 San Jose runner-up to his good friend Roddick.

The 2007 SAP titlist will earn $65,850.

Cardinals' Davis to test free agency

TEMPE, Ariz. (UPI) -- The Arizona Cardinals have decided to let offensive tackle Leonard Davis test the free agent waters.

The six-year veteran is due to become an unrestricted free agent March 2. The team noted on its Web site that his contract expired after the 2006 season.

"When we evaluated Leonard, we certainly see ability and as improvement, especially as last season went on," said new Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt. "But when you look at the situation on the whole and take everything into account, we don't feel that the investment that would be required to keep him is equal to the performance. We have needs at multiple positions, as well as for depth, and we want to be in the best position us to address those needs."

Davis was the second overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Texas behind Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick.

He was a guard at the start of his career and has played in 91 NFL games.

Tampion, 22 and playing in his fourth tournament as a professional, opened his second round with birdies at Nos. 1 and 4. He had a bogey at 6 but answered with another birdie at the eighth hole. He piled up three birdies in the first five holes of the back nine to get to eight under.

Sabres' Afinogenov out with broken wrist

BUFFALO, N.Y. (UPI) -- Buffalo forward Maxim Afinogenov has a broken left wrist and will miss at least six weeks of the Sabres' schedule, the NHL team announced Friday.

Edmonton's Jason Smith knocked Afinogenov into the boards late in the second period of Thursday night's game and the Buffalo player fell to the ice. Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff said Afinogenov broke the scaphoid bone in his wrist when he fell and would be out a "minimum of six weeks"

Afinogenov is second on the Sabres in scoring with 23 goals and 34 assists in 53 games this season.

Buffalo, which leads the NHL Eastern Conference with 82 points, also said that forward Jiri Novotny will be sidelined indefinitely after aggravating a high-ankle sprain.

China: No Olympic surcharge for Westerners

BEIJING (UPI) -- Chinese officials say tickets for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics will be affordable and Westerners will not be charged more than anyone else.

"If Chinese and Westerners are charged different prices, it will not honor the Olympic spirit," Beijing Vice Mayor Liu Jingmin said in an interview aired on Beijing Television, China Daily reported.

More than 7 million tickets will go on sale this year.

Prices were published Nov. 29 on the official Web site of the Games. Seats for the opening ceremony will be priced as low as $22.50; and more than 58 percent of all tickets will be $13 or less, with the lowest ticket at $4.

Olympic officials are offering student tickets, about 14 percent of all tickets available in China, costing 64 cents for preliminaries and $1.28 for finals.

Gordon reacts to car inspection failure

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UPI) -- Jeff Gordon Friday said he accepts his fate with NASCAR officials after his Chevrolet failed a post-race inspection because of height violation.

Gordon won Thursday's second Gatorade qualifying run for this Sunday's Daytona 500, but during the inspection, his car was found to be an inch too low.

He was sent to the back, and will start the race from the 42nd position when he would have started fourth.

"I will challenge any person in this garage area that knows how these cars go around the racetrack to tell me that car had a competitive advantage," Gordon said on NASCAR.com. "The bottom line is, we were too low. We take full responsibility for that. I'm just mad that it happened."

There have been several penalties this week, including the indefinite suspension of Michael Waltrip crew chief David Hyder, and the deduction of 100 championship points from team owner Elizabeth Waltrip.

Tennis

Sharapova, Serena withdraw from Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (UPI) -- Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams both withdrew Friday from next week's WTA Dubai Duty Free Women's Open Tennis Tournament, citing ailments.

Williams, who trounced Sharapova on Jan. 27 to win the Australian Open for her eighth Grand Slam title, has battled the flu in recent days.

The illness forced her to opt out of this week's Bangalore Open in India.

Sharapova has been hampered by a hamstring injury.

"I'm very disappointed to have to withdraw," Sharapova said in a statement. "The hamstring that I injured in Tokyo is not yet healed. I tried everything possible to be in condition to play, but unfortunately I'm not ready. I'm looking forward to continuing to recover as quickly as possible so that I can get back on the court competing."

Justine Henin, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Martina Hingis will head the field at Dubai.

Baseball approves Bonds' contract

NEW YORK (UPI) -- Major League Baseball Thursday approved the one-year contract between the San Francisco Giants and slugger Barry Bonds.

The deal, worked out last month, is for $15.8 million, with $4.2 million in incentives. It originally was rejected by baseball's front office.

The 42-year-old Bonds immediately was added the Giants' 40-man roster.

The team's position players are due to report to spring training at Scottsdale, Ariz., Monday.

"Barry has never been late (to spring training) in his 22 seasons as a Major League player and I don't expect him to be late this year," Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, told MLB.com.

Bonds, who has been plagued by knee problems in recent years -- and has been the subject of speculation about whether he has used performance enhancing substances -- will begin the 2007 season needing 22 home runs to become baseball's all-time leader in that category. Hank Aaron holds the record with 755.

Bonds batted .270 with 26 homers and 77 RBI in 2006.

Tim Hardaway sorry for anti-gay tirade

MIAMI (UPI) -- Former Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway has been dropped as an NBA spokesman after telling a radio interviewer he hates homosexuals.

Hardaway, speaking on the Miami radio station 790 The Ticket, said that if he had been on a team with someone who came out as gay he would have asked for a trade either of the homosexual player or himself, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

"Well, you know, I hate gay people," Hardaway said. "I let it be known, I don't like gay people. I don't like to be around gay people.

He released a brief apology through his agent, but said in another interview that he would not speak to any relatives he knew were gay.

Last week, John Amaechi, a former guard with the Utah Jazz, became the first NBA player to reveal he is gay. Amaechi, who now lives in his native England, is about to publish a book, "Man in the Middle."

Hardaway, who played with the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets, was part of the NBA'S Community Caravan for the All-Star Game.

"It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement.

LSU athletic director to step down in 2008

BATON ROUGE, La. (UPI) -- Louisiana State Athletic Director Skip Bertman has agreed to a contract extension and said he intends to retire when it expires next year.

The new deal allows Bertman to serve as athletic director emeritus of two years after his retirement, helping with fundraising among other duties. He would step down as LSU athletic director in June 2008.

Bertman became the school's athletic director in 2001 after serving as the head baseball coach since 1983. His teams won five NCAA championships.

"By the time I retire I will be 70 years old and will have spent the greatest 25 years of my life as an LSU Tiger," said Bertman. "The memories and the friends I will take with me will be cherished forever."

Plaphol leads at Indonesian Open

JAKARTA (UPI) -- Chawalit Plaphol turned in a bogey-free six-under-par 65 Thursday and has the first-round lead at the Indonesian Open stop of the European golf tour.

Mikko Ilonen was in second place, one stroke behind Plaphol, while Shiv Kapur and Mads Vibe-Hastrup were in third place at four-under-par 67. Twelve threesomes were not able to complete first-round play because of a heavy downpour.

Plaphol played in one of the earliest groups Thursday and carded six birdies and 12 pars at the par-71 Damai Indah Golf & Country Club.

"The key here is to keep it on the fairway because the wind tends to pick up in the afternoon so you have to strike it quite accurately off the tee," Plaphol said.

Ilonen had seven birdies in his round but also had two bogeys.

Doan signs long-term deal with Phoenix

PHOENIX (UPI) -- Shane Doan and the Phoenix Coyotes have agreed to a five-year extension to the player's contract with the NHL team in a deal reportedly worth $23 million.

Doan, 31, the Coyotes' captain, has 19 goals and 16 assists in 48 games for Phoenix this season. Over his 11-year-career, he has 191 goals and 261 assists in 778 games -- all with Phoenix. He was the only active roster play to make the move when the Winnipeg Jets were shifted to Phoenix in 1996.

"I'm extremely excited to remain a Coyote," said Doan. "I was drafted by this organization and it means a great deal to me to be able to play with this franchise my entire career.

"I am very excited about our team, coaches and management and I am confident about our future. I chose to stay with the Coyotes because I love this city and our fans and I want to win here, not anywhere else."

NCAA football eyes new time-saving rules

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (UPI) -- The NCAA football rules committee this week proposed a series of time-saving measures intended to save up to 14 minutes in an average U.S. college game.

After similar changes implemented by the committee last season were criticized by college coaches and fans alike, USA Today said the NCAA reacted by introducing more subtle regulations in a session Wednesday.

With all of last year's changes discarded, the committee ruled that all kick-offs next season will be moved back five yards to the 30-yard-line to eliminate time-wasting touchbacks.

In addition, the committee proposed shortened timeouts for teams, limited play clocks after TV timeouts and a two-minute replay time limit.

If the proposed changes are passed by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel in March, they would be implemented next season.

"I think we've got a balance with the idea that we are attacking dead and elapsed time in a game while securing playing time not just for the players but for the fans," committee member and Division III coach Michael Clark told USA Today.

Waltrip speaks on Daytona 500 fiasco

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (UPI) -- Michael Waltrip Thursday said he considered pulling out of the Daytona 500 qualifying race because of rules violations by crew chief David Hyder.

Waltrip's No. 55 Toyota was cited after last Sunday's Gatorade Duel qualifying runs.

NASCAR officials said there were three serious violations, including illegal car parts components and a gasoline additive.

Hyder has been suspended indefinitely.

Reports have said an unspecified substance was found in the intake manifold.

"I am ready to bear all responsibility for what happened," Waltrip said. "I am here today to apologize to the NASCAR fans, sponsors and other team owners. You can't hurt me any worse than I am right now. We haven't fired anyone nor do we plan on firing anyone until we know what happened. We are aggressively trying to find out what happened. What took place was the act of an individual or individuals and is not a reflection on our team."

Soccer

Ching returning to soccer's Houston Dynamo

HOUSTON (UPI) -- Brian Ching, the Major League Soccer Cup's most valuable player last season, Thursday agreed to a contract with the Houston Dynamo.

Terms of the deal were not released.

Ching, 28, tied for the team lead with 11 goals for Houston last season, including a bicycle kick score against D.C. United that sent the Dynamo into the MLS playoffs. That goal was voted the MLS goal of the year.

Houston went 11-8-13 in 2006 and won the MLS Cup by defeating the New England Revolution on penalty kicks. Ching had the lone Houston goal in regulation play that forced the penalty kick situation.

"I love this team, and want to continue playing in Houston," Ching said. "What we did last year was just a taste of what the Dynamo can accomplish in the future. I am looking forward to continuing to build on the success we showed in 2006."

Santangelo advances at India tennis

BANGALORE, India (UPI) -- Defending champion Mara Santangelo rallied to claim a three-set victory Thursday in the second round of the Sony Ericsson International tournament in India.

Santangelo, the top seed in this week's event, dropped the first set and needed 12 games before claiming the second in a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Akgul Amanmuradova.

No. 2 seeded Sania Mirza, a local favorite and the 2005 tournament champion, posted an identical 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 win in her match against Tatiana Poutchek.

Santangelo advanced to Friday's quarterfinals against Yurika Sema while Mirza next goes against Yaroslava Shvedova. The other quarterfinals matches send Jelena Kostanic Tosic against Olga Savchuk and Melinda Czink against Tzipora Obziler.

Savchuk Thursday beat Alicia Molik, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and Czink topped Su-Wei Hsieh, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.
